A Dynamic Syntax-Semantics Interface

چکیده

The relation between syntax and semantics of natural language can be regarded as a constraint. With the ideas from Channel Theory (Barwise 1993, Barwise and Seligman 1994), the way that an utterance represents a situation can be captured as a linguistic channel. To study the operational aspects of such a channel, we construct it as a system of communicating processes by turning to the -calculus (Milner et al. 1992). We show how a concurrent bottom-up chart parser can be encoded in the calculus and how a semantic object similar to those employed in Situation Theoretic Discourse Representation Theory (Cooper 1993) can be created as the result of interactions between processes encoding the parser.

Reverse Engineering of Network Software Binary Codes for Identification of Syntax and Semantics of Protocol Messages

Reverse engineering of network applications especially from the security point of view is of high importance and interest. Many network applications use proprietary protocols which specifications are not publicly available. Reverse engineering of such applications could provide us with vital information to understand their embedded unknown protocols. This could facilitate many tasks including d...

Cross-linguistic Influence at Syntax-pragmatics Interface: A Case of OPC in Persian

Recent research in the area of Second Language Acquisition has proposed that bilinguals and L2 learners show syntactic indeterminacy when syntactic properties interface with other cognitive domains. Most of the research in this area has focused on the pragmatic use of syntactic properties while the investigation of compliance with a grammatical rule at syntax-related interfaces has not received...

Syntax vs. semantics: competing approaches to dynamic network intrusion detection

Malicious network traffic, including widespread worm activity, is a growing threat to Internet-connected networks and hosts. In this paper, we consider two competing approaches to dynamic network intrusion detection: syntax based and semantics based approaches. For the syntax driven approach, we propose two sliding window based schemes to generate potential worm signatures automatically. Since ...

Dynamic Denotational Semantics of Java

This chapter presents a dynamic denotational semantics of the Java programming language. This semantics covers almost the full range of the base language, excluding only concurrency and the API's. A discussion of these limitations is provided in the nal section of the chapter. The abstract syntax described in Chapter 1 tells us how to construct a grammatically correct program. Every syntactical...

A Unidimensional Syntax-Semantics Interface for Supplements

I extend the recent unidimensional semantics of supplements due to Martin to a full syntax-semantics interface. The grammar formalism employs a two-component syntax, with one component modeling combinatorics and another for surface form. I show that the syntax-semantics for supplements is relatively uncomplicated, requiring only two new lexical entries. I contrast this with the complex machiner...
